Back then wood boxes were the way to go - mainly because pine was cheap and plentiful...Of course the boxes had to be strong and normally using dovetail joints would be considered the perfect solution but the problem is that they are too time consuming for mass production and require more expensive machinery. The box joint was a better alternative to a fast and furious production..It differs with its interlocking parts that use only right angles also rather than pins and tails box joints have 'fingers' and opposing slots.
